Robert Spotnitz

Dr. Robert Spotnitz is a pioneer in physics-based battery simulation. He spent over a decade at W.R. Grace & Co., where he notably co-invented the multi-layer shutdown battery separator. He subsequently managed the Battery Applications Lab at Hoechst Celanese (Celgard) and served as Director of Advanced Product Development at PolyStor.

In 1999, recognizing the value of physcis-based models, he founded Battery Design LLC and created Battery Design Studio, a computational modeling environment for cell design that became the reference in the field. Following a partnership with CD-adapco and an eventual acquisition by Siemens, the software evolved to become Simcenter Battery Design Studio, the digital twin software used by automotive OEMs globally. In addition to his modeling work, Dr. Spotnitz has served as an advisor for advanced battery start-ups, including Enovix and American Lithium Energy.
